Why is life so cruel, so cold, so unkind?
I ask the winds, but answers I can’t find.
Is it nature’s twisted game to play,
To let some flourish, while others decay?
Why must I suffer, year after year,
Drowning in sorrow, weighed down by fear?
What sin have I committed, what wrong must I pay,
To endure this endless, torturous stay?
Is it nature’s lottery, a roll of the dice,
That some get joy while I bear the price?
Why couldn’t I be a mayfly, just one brilliant day,
To live in the sun, then drift away?
One glorious moment, that’s all I’d need,
No time for heartache, no wounds to bleed.
To soar through the sky in a fleeting burst,
No bitter ends, no lasting curse.
No time for the shadows to creep inside,
No years of feeling the need to hide.
Just one day, pure and bright,
A flash of joy, then fade to night.
No lingering pain, no drawn-out strife,
Just a brief, sweet taste of life.
To come, to go, to dance and fly,
No time to ask the question, "Why?"
But here I am, still stuck in place,
With all the years I can’t erase.
Why must I carry this heavy load,
When all I want is the mayfly’s road?
So here I sit, beneath the sky,
Wishing I could just live and die.
One brilliant day, no pain to feel,
No time to question what’s real.
But instead, I endure, year after year,
Waiting for peace that never draws near.
Why must it be this way, I ask the air,
Life’s cruel, and it’s just not fair.
